The tradition of the local clay makers
survived for centuries up to our days in several regional
nucleuses, so the art of handicraft is still very much
alive in the whole of the country, namely in Alentejo.
The crescent creativity inspired by the art of the artisans
that spills into other forms of traditional work and enhances
the cultural heritage of the area. This tradition is a
source of pride to the locals and their main contribution
to the development of Alentejo. Pottery is an especially
old tradition in Nisa where the jugs for water cantarinhas
are very famous. These are made of deep red clay "bedewed"
with tiny white stones. The drawings are marked with a
needle and the little quartz stones are set in the clay
as an adornment.
The
decorative motifs are entirely handmade by skillful women,
and pedradeiras, which inlay the small quartz stones,
one by one, onto the red clay pieces. The multiplicity
of the inlayed stones is the richest decoration made on
a Nisa pottery piece, due to the large amount of stones
needed, and that's why these jugs are also called "1st
quality crockery". |

The
cantarinha is used to store water, having a mug to drink more
easily. The water when in this jug stays cool fresh and slight
typical clay taste, quenching your thirst in a unique way. Besides
its utility, the cantarinha is one of the most appreciated Nisa
pottery pieces, to decorate any place it is in, e.g. at the center
of the table.
